This Naked Mind Coach For Men
The gap between understanding it and feeling it is where the real work begins..
You've read the This Naked Mind book. Maybe you've done a course. You understand the ideas, the way alcohol was sold to you, the way the subconscious beliefs were built up over years and the way desire can change when understanding replaces conditioning.
It all makes sense. Logically, you're there.
And yet.
The thought still pops in when a work function comes up, a weekend with the boys or a moment of stress that used to be a quick "yes!" Not a craving exactly. More like a question. How will I handle this without drinking? What will people think? Will I lose friends and associates if I don't drink?
Those aren't logical fears. You already know the logic. They're emotional ones and they don't respond to logic no matter how clearly you can spell out what alcohol actually does. That gap, between understanding something and fully feeling it, is where a lot of men get stuck after This Naked Mind (TNM) material.
Digging into the gap is where the work really is.
Why a coach and why a male one?
I know This Naked Mind works. The methodology is sound and the results are real. For many though, they come away feeling they are not quite there yet. This is completely normal because we are complex human beings. We don't fit into neat partitions or pigeon holes.
A book, a webinar, a podcast, even a great one, can only take you so far into your own particular version of this. Your beliefs about your identity, your family, your environment, your friends, how you cope and what drinking means in the specific context of your life, those are all yours.
Working through them takes conversation, not just reading and thinking.
There's currently one active male This Naked Mind certified coach in Australia, myself! That's not a boast, it's just the reality of a space that skews heavily toward women coaching women.
(Fun fact: Female TNM coaches outnumber male coaches by 4 to 1).
For a man who wants to work with someone who has been where he is, who understands the particular shape of drinking in Australian male culture, work functions, sport, the mate-ship and how not drinking can feel like opting out of life rather than just alcohol.
Finding the right person to work with matters as much as finding the right methodology.
How I Got Here
I didn't find This Naked Mind first, it wasn't even a thing in 2007. I found willpower.
For eight years I used it to stay sober, and for eight years it worked, until it didn't. The relapse didn't happen because I was weak. It happened because willpower is an exhausting way to hold something at bay indefinitely and eventually all the effort is like the proverbial straw on the camels back.
It only takes an event or situation where you don't have the coping tools to keep willpower in check to tip you over and seek relief in drinking. I know what that feels like from the inside.
What This Naked Mind gave me wasn't more willpower. It gave me a different relationship with alcohol entirely. My desire for alcohol changed because my understanding changed, not because I gritted my teeth harder. That shift, from managing alcohol to simply not wanting it the way I once did, is what I work toward with every man I coach. From that position a man can make a free and informed choice about where alcohol sits in his life.
I've been a certified This Naked Mind coach since 2022. Before that, twenty-one years in the Royal Australian Air Force, followed by a career in IT training and consulting.
I'm not a therapist, counsellor or a clinician.
I'm an Alcohol Freedom Coach who has done this himself, understands the methodology deeply and works specifically with men.
What the work actually looks like
We start with understanding. Exploring your drinking history not as a confession but purely as information. We are seeking to understand the beliefs underneath the drinking behaviour. What does alcohol actually represent in your life, the relief, the reward, the social passport? When you know what you're actually working with, choices and action become possible in a way they weren't before.
If something doesn't go to plan, we treat it as data. What happened, what was underneath it, what does it tell us about what still needs to shift. There's no shame and blame in the process and no judgment about the pace. Men who've spent years in the willpower cycle often expect to be evaluated against some standard of how quickly they should be getting this.
That's not how this works.
The goal isn't white-knuckled sobriety. It isn't a label, a meeting or a commitment made under pressure. It's a point where alcohol simply no longer makes sense for you, where the conversation in your head quiets down because there's nothing left to negotiate, only choices and action.
Work with me
Whether you've done the TNM programs, podcast, book reading or not, don't worry!
If you feel ready to work through your own version of this with someone who gets it, a Strategy Call is the place to start. It's a proper conversation, not a sales pitch.
We'll talk about where you are, what's still catching you out and what working together could look like.
No pressure. Just conversation. The first step is usually the hardest. This one doesn't have to be!
