The Toolbox | Processing emotions without alcohol
Happiness is a full socket set box, 10mm included I lost my toolbox last week. Not misplaced it, not lent it to someone and forgotten who. It fell off the back of my ute while I was driving home, bounced across the road and was gone inside six minutes! Twenty kilos of tools I had been collecting and using for forty years, including specialist tools I had made myself for maintaining my own aircraft. Gone. Just like that. The tailgate was down. I knew it was down. I had been re

People pleasing and alcohol | The Man Who Couldn't Say No
Outwardly smiling, inwardly churning.. He held the whiskey a long time before he drank it. It was a quiet night in a friend's lounge room, no occasion to speak of, and the friend had poured two glasses without asking. He wasn't thirsty. He just didn't want to be the one who said no. He told me about it weeks later, still turning it over. "Saying no felt like disrespect." That sentence piqued my curiosity, it felt like something he'd known for years and never said out loud. "S

Next winter a bit more foliage but the local rabbits started to dig them up. As they are poisonous no leaves were eaten but they caused

Pick Me! Pick Me!
"Pick me, pick me", I exclaimed excitedly as we approached the RBT (DUI) stop ahead. Slowing down in anticipation of a stern finger point to the kerb, I looked over to my wife who had a bemused look on her face, she uttered just one word. "Nutter." "I hope they ask me when I had my last drink.. 'yes sir, years ago..' haha". Darn, not today as they waved us on. Genuinely disappointed I motored past the stop observing other motorists going through the "breatho" drill. I could

Perfectly Imperfect
The theatre dimmed, the audience quietened we had come to see our granddaughter perform in the combined schools concert. The kids began the first performance to cheers and clapping, their little faces lit up with delight at being on stage for a real audience. As the performances went on, I began to notice a pattern in the performers, and it was with compassion and warmth that I realised there was a cross section of kids all doing their absolute best on stage with smiles on t
